The house structure of boksburg high school
“Well done Boksburg High School! 2010 We saw the revival of the Green Blood and the spirit that was a tradition in previous years. Our blood will be NOTHING BUT GREEN!’
the benefits of our house structure
The House Structure allows us to perpetuate the good traditions built in the last 75 years. Dividing the school into smaller manageable groups consisting of all grades enables our educators to get to know learners across the sphere of the school. Instead of managing 1600 learners, the groups of (no more than) 400 learners are much more personalized. The House Deans and House Homeroom teachers can create a wonderful relationship with the learners.
Houses assist us in creating a feeling of “belonging” amongst the learners as well as the educators and improving participation and healthy competition in all spheres of school life.
Instead of rewarding only 20 learners per grade with academic excellence, the House system allows us to reward 80 learners (20 per house).
We now have a more ‘hands on’ discipline structure as well as a ‘step-in-between’ before learners are referred to a custodial hearing - Deans Detention and Internal Suspension are very effective ways of punishment.
We have also improved upon the enforcement of the School uniform code of conduct through the House system.
The House system has facilitated our staff to be part of decision making and given our staff more opportunities for growth under the guidance of more experienced staff members. Eight post level 1 educators are now included in the management team of the School, and these educators have shown wonderful leadership and development.
House meetings in the morning are definitely an improvement of communication with the learners.
THE Viking Cup
The winning House will be awarded with the Viking Cup at the beginning of term 4. Any activity thereafter will be added to the new year.
THE 'GREEN BLOOD' camp
Each year we budget for the Green Blood camp. The Top 15 learners of each House (who accumulated the most individual points) are invited to the camp and all expenses are paid.
